The temperature of bituminous materials when mixed, delivered and laid is very important, in particular the dense macadam and asphalt. On-site checks are made by checking the delivery note and using a thermometer.

Quality control procedures should be in place on-site to ensure that the material is of the correct specification and temperature. Tonnages ordered should be checked against the weighbridge note where supplied by the carrier

Prior to laying the material should be 'turned over' to ensure that the material is fully mixed.

The use of a hot box or heated vehicle bed should also be considered for long duration jobs or if the material is expected to sit for long periods.
